FAQs

Why do I need to have my chimney/flue swept?

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular sweeping will remove soot, birds’ nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney sweeping will also increase the efficiency of some appliances.

How often does it need sweeping?

This depends on a number of factors. The type of fuel used, the type of appliance, duration of use, the moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. We can advise on frequency during your sweep.

Will it make a mess?

No, we make no mess at all and have been trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping.Dust sheets are used to cover the entire floor area where we work and are used to seal off the fire place/wood burner prior to sweeping.

I have heard that liners don't need swept?

This is a common misconception, any solid fuel appliance must be swept at least once a year whether it is lined or not. The gases given off when burning wood contain corrosive substances which will cling to the liner, particularly at the top where it is cooler. These substances will eventually rot the liner resulting in costly replacement (see images of rotten liners we have had to replace). Sweeping will help to prolong the life of your liner and support the guarantee requirements set out by your liner manufacturer.

How can I prevent birds nesting in my chimney?

We supply and fit bird guards and can advise for the correct size and type of guard for your chimney pot. Jack daws nest in the same place every spring so if you have recently had a bird nest removed it is essential to fit a guard before they return. On a recent sweep we had to remove a Jackdaw from the stove pipe the bird was still alive but had a few burnt feathers. They had managed to get the unsuitable chicken wire off the chimney so we fitted a more appropriate guard.

How much will a sweep cost?

This depends on the number of chimneys to be swept, if there is a blockage, if the wood burner has a sweeping hatch, we offer a discount for all first sweeps so give us a call for a quote. Prices start at £40 for a sweep and certificate, prices for additional services can be given upon request.

What discounts do you offer?

As previously stated we offer discounts for all first sweeps. We can also offer you a discount for multiple sweeps if you have more than one chimney or wood burner. We also offer street discounts, if you know a neighbour who wants their chimney swept and arrange them on the same day this qualifies for a discount. Give us a call to ask for more information.
